Referees FTW

Sports. I love 'em. I played a lot of baseball as a kid, and once I was a little too old for that I switched to softball. I've played quite a few sports over the years, and the only thing I love more than playing them is watching them.

This time of year is, for me, football time. I've been a fan of the San Francisco 49ers since I was a little kid. My uncle lived in California and tried to brainwash me at a very early age...and it worked. I saw some great 49ers teams as I was growing up and they look to be on the upswing again.

One of the things I love about football are the bloopers. Every now and then you get a classic moment that just won't ever be forgotten. Usually the players do something memorable, but every now and then the referees get the spotlight.

Check out one of my favorites here:

A Leftover Sandwich

Ever since I was a young child, one of my favorite holidays was Thanksgiving: the food was amazing, you got together with people you didn't see very often, and there were parades and football on the television. For a young boy, there was nothing better in the world.

Unfortunately, as with most things, adulthood brought about a change in how I viewed the holiday. I could still see the things that I loved about the holiday as a child, but there was some tarnish on the shiny edges of my Thanksgiving joy. The holiday went from being one that I always anticipated to one that I looked at with mild disdain.

So, in an effort to get back to the basics, I decided to do a Thanksgiving dinner with just a few close friends. A Franksgiving, if you will. As we all had familial obligations to fulfill on the actual holiday, we decided to shoot for a date about two weeks prior. And now, every year, we have a Franksgiving dinner two Saturdays before Thanksgiving. This gives us all a relaxed holiday free of stress and family. What could be better?

Which brings me to one of my favorite parts: the leftovers. There's nothing better than enjoying a turkey sandwich with a little bit of mayo on it.........or so I thought. This year my girlfriend Laura asked me why I wasn't making a "leftover sandwich". I asked her what she meant and she told me that you take a little potato, a little stuffing, turkey, some cranberry sauce, and the gravy, and throw it onto two toasted slices of bread.

Now, I'm not a person who is afraid of food. I'll try anything once and I am NOT a picky eater. But every time someone had talked about doing this with Thanksgiving (or, in this case, Franksgiving) leftovers, I viewed it as blasphemy. To me, you either made a turkey sandwich or reheated the components for a whole dinner. Potatoes and stuffing? In a sandwich? NO!!!

After a small discussion, she convinced me to actually try it this year. So there I was, at 36, trying something that most kids over the age of 10 have tried. I toasted two slices of bread, threw some mayo on there, and added the rest. Turkey? Check. Mashed potatoes? Check. Stuffing? Check.

WOW.

It was fantastic. In fact, it was so good that I picked up all the ingredients for a turkey dinner on Sunday. Tuesday night I cooked the turkey and other sides, and enjoyed a turkey dinner. But the true enjoyment came as I was packing the leftovers into the fridge...because I knew that more leftover sandwiches were heading my way.
